Over the last few weeks I have heard a few people grumbling about reaching their data limits…Although I am grandfathered in on AT&T’s unlimited data plan (which I will NOT change ) – I have found a great app that I have been testing out to keep tabs on (and compress) my data usage.
The app is called Onavo Extend For IPhone (yes android users, there is an app for you too)….
You can read more about what it can do for you, but the short version is that it compresses the data sent and received by your phone.
The percentages vary depending on the app, and type of data being transmitted (videos, streaming music, facebook, email attachments, instagram uploads, etc). They claim you can save up to 80% on your data usage….I can’t say I have seen those numbers…(I was at 7% in November and 8% so far this month)…but those numbers are nothing to take lightly either…
as you can see from the screenshots below, the percentages definitely vary on the app being used.
It’s free for both Apple and Android users…..at least from the Iphone side…it’s very easy to install. it basically sets up a VPN connection and that’s how the inbound and outbound data is compressed.
It only activates when you are on regular cell service (so it will turn off when you are using Wifi)…..so far I have not seen any drawbacks, so you might want to check it out if you are regularly hitting your data limits.
